education: birds of georgia White-eyed Vireo, Vireo griseus
This species is a common summer resident, 8 Mar 9 1943- 29 Nov (1979), breeding throughout the state except in the mountains, where it does not breed above 700 meters. It is an uncommon winter resident south of the fall line and rare in the piedmont. A common migrant throughout the state, its peak passage occurs 9 Apr -27 May and 19 Sep - 4 Oct. (Beaton, et al, 2003. Annotated Checklist of Georgia Birds) It is more easily heard than seen. Whereas other vireo species commonly found in Georgia are seen in the upper branches of deciduous trees, this species skulks in low bushes and brush, singing its loud and distinctively hitchy song. The adult birds have a striking white eye color, but the juvenile birds show dark eyes. The uninitiate have mistaken juvenile birds of this species for the accidental Bell's Vireo. The small, pendulous nest is artfully attached to the limb of a small bush or tree, such as wild plum. Range in Georgia (Georgia GAP project) |
