the etowah initiative: fall 2003
conserving natural resources and expanding recreational opportunities in the upper etowah watershed

Etoway Recreational Trail (12.3 MB PDF) (1.86 MB PDF slideshow)

The Etowah River Basin is unique in its diversity of aquatic species as well as its scenic and recreational potential. Due to expanding development pressures in the Upper Etowah watershed, the need for conservation planning is essential. This planning must balance increased human use with ecological protection. In 2001, a regional greenspace plan was developed by University of Georgia graduate students, but has not yet been implemented due to lack of funding. This project will identify areas along the Etowah and its tributaries which are suitable for conservation and expanded recreational use. A central project objective is to pursue state and federal funding opportunities to secure specified properties and promote sustainable public use, thereby fulfilling components of the regional greenspace plan.

To support the request for funding, the proposal will include a conceptual plan focused on linking selected properties along the Etowah River. One possible component of the conceptual plan is a blueway trail which will provide a clearly marked paddling route and help increase general ecological awareness of the river. Another option, in areas where paddling is not feasible, is to create a greenway for pedestrians and bicycle use. The planning process will take into account various selection criteria including habitat protection, historical and geologic significance, educational outreach, availability of property, and the threat of development. Ultimately, this proposal seeks to address educational, recreational, and ecological needs essential to long term watershed protection.
