Draft Project Report: A Portrait of Conservation In the Satilla Watershed (PDF)

Through conversations with stakeholders and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, it is evident that the opportunity to protect the natural integrity of the Satilla River Watershed is now. This unique habitat in Southeast Georgia is currently under assault by a lack of planning, zoning, and enforcement of regulations. Rural development is continuing without controls. Cabins and trailer sites encroach into the floodplain, and cars and off-road vehicles damage the streambed. Working with stakeholders to reduce the impact of human activities on water quality and biodiversity will alleviate many of the negative environmental impacts within the watershed. This project will provide a setting to discuss water-related issues in the Satilla River Watershed by facilitating communication between a diverse group of stakeholders.

In this project, we will identify and establish relationships with and between stakeholders. This communication will be the basis for determining priority issues and possible solutions to these issues. Through these initial conversations, we will ascertain the most productive way for stakeholders to work together to find common ground on environmental issues. Ultimately, we will organize an event where stakeholders can interact with each other and determine a course of action to ensure protection of the Satilla River Watershed. By providing a framework for an ongoing dialogue, stakeholders can work together to identify threats, find solutions, and possibly obtain the necessary resources to achieve their goals. This project will also serve as the foundation for future cooperative interactions among stakeholders concerning water-related issues within the Satilla Watershed.
