Southern Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus leucocephalus

Bald eagles are not an unusual sight in the estuary of the AltamahaRiver, especially in winter, when several birds of this species may be using the area. However, only one pair of bald eagles is known to breed along the River, represented by the single record from Glynn County. It is likely that only the estuary of the Altamaha provides enough habitat to support a breeding population of this rare scavenger of fishes.
