mountains climate

georgia's climate | mountains | piedmont | coastal plain

The Georgia mountains occupy the northern quarter of the state, with elevations ranging from around 1000 ft to 4784 ft at Brasstown Bald. The climate in the mountains is variable, with some of the variation depending on elevation. Yearly average temperatures are in the 50s with average summer temperatures in the mid-80s. However, days in the 90s are not unusual in summer and days with temperatures well below freezing occur regularly during the winter. This is the region of the state which receives the most snow, and it also receives the most rain. The northeastern corner of the state receives nearly 5 inches of rain annually.

For a complete description of Georgia's mountain climate see the brochure put out by the State Climatologist's Office. You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file. It can be downloaded free.
