hydrology Animals and Plants: Common Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota) Queen Anne's Lace was introduced to North America hundreds of years ago by European settlers. Queen Anne's Lace is easy to identify and is often seen in abundance along the sides of roads or in meadows. The plant grows approximately 1 m (2-4 ft) tall. It produces large (7-13 cm or 3-6 in), white, flat cluster of flowers, which resemble lace. It has been suggested that Queen Anne's Lace is not actually named for Queen Anne, a former queen of England. This flower may actually have been named for Saint Anne, the patron saint of lace. Queen Anne's Lace produces a tender, edible root when the plant is young. This root is very similar to a carrot. It is thought that Queen Anne's Lace is closely related to the carrot plant. |
