the upper altamaha initiative:
fall 2005
Abstract TMDLs were developed for High Falls Lake in 2004 for PCBs and fecal coliform. In an effort to identify and remediate the source of the fecal coliform contamination, a study was done on the current septic management practices around the community. The studies suggest that part of the problem could be poor septic management practices, although Arial Photography taken in spring of 1999 around the High Falls Lake and Creeks leading into the lake showed a high incidence of agricultural activity. To determine the effect and extent that current septic management practices could be having on the fecal coliform impairment of the lake, interviews with the residents on septic systems will be carried out through surveys. Educational materials on proper septic management systems will be presented to the High Falls Lake association and subsequently to residents of the community through handouts. An ordinance on appropriate safety septic management practices will be prepared for the community and passed through the High Falls Lake Association in order to be presented to the County commissioners. It is hoped that this project will serve as an incipient process in improving the water quality of the Lake and the surrounding creeks, some of which are still pristine. Furthermore, the outcome of this project with respect to septic management, educational awareness and ordinance development could serve as a working model for most of the creeks that feed into the lake, some of which are still designated impaired with respect to fecal coliform.
