An Evaluation of Viable Uses for the Property Donated by Dr. Eugene Odum to the Institute of Ecology (PPT presentation in PDF format) An Evaluation of Viable Uses for the Property Donated by Dr. Eugene Odum to the Institute of Ecology (Report in PDF format) Abstract Dr. Eugene Odum left in his will to the Institute of Ecology approximately 111 acres on the Broad River in Madison County Georgia. A conservation easement was placed on the property to allow preservation of the floodplain and slopes closest to the river. Dr. Odum was not adverse to development on the secondary conservation area, a 25 acre tract on a higher ridge plain of the property connecting to a nearby roadway. The Institute of Ecology must decide if this property should be retained for conservation, utilized for research and education, or sold for development. If the Institute decides to sell the property, it will want to ensure that development is compatible with the surrounding area; thus, marketing the property to the appropriate buyer will be key. To assist the Institute of Ecology in the decision making process, this project endeavors to explore the aforementioned alternatives. Through research into property values and property tax issues, interviews with interested individuals and assessment of the conservation and heritage value of this property, we hope to assist in the Institute of Ecology's decision making process. The final product of this project will consist of a Power Point presentation with supporting data along with a written opinion and suggestion paper from the project partners.
