the upper altamaha initiative:
spring 2007
Abstract Trail Creek is listed as an impaired stream on the state 303(d) list by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for not meeting its designated uses of fishing, because of fecal coliform levels exceeding 200cfu/100ml. Athens-Clarke County (ACC) has requested assistance in identifying sources of fecal coliform and identifying best management practices for reducing or eliminating this pollutant, in order to eventually de-list the stream. The plan will recommend best management practices for controlling fecal coliform tailored specifically to the potential sources along Trail Creek. This project is a continuation of the West Fork of Trail Creek Impaired Waters Exploratory Sampling and Future Recommendations project undertaken last semester in the Practicum. This previous group identified one source of fecal coliform along Trail Creek and developed a plan for additional sampling to determine other sources of this pollutant, which will guide our initial sampling. We will identify, evaluate, and document additional potential sources of fecal coliform pollution by conducting steam walks, water quality sampling, and aerial mapping. A comprehensive sampling strategy will be developed for West Fork Trail Creek and will likely consist of three phases. The first phase will include sampling at bridges and overpasses which provide easy access to the streams. Phase two will consist of sampling above and below confluences along the main stem of West Fork Trail Creek. Finally, the third phase will involve targeted sampling at suspected sources.
