Research : Stormwater Management
Green Roofs

PhD student Tim Carter is establishing a vegetated roof research site on the Science Library-Boyd Hall Graduate Studies building on the campus of the University of Georgia. The roof was installed September 30 - October 1 with assistance from the Office of the University Architect and UGA Physical Plant, as well as faculty, staff and students of the Institute of Ecology. It was planted in various Sedum species that are drought-tolerant and can thrive in the harsh conditions of a rooftop. A lightweight, engineered growing medium enabled roofs to be retrofitted with this vegetative cover. The roof will be studied for its ability to retain stormwater as part of a larger urban watershed remediation project.

For more information about this project, please contact Tim Carter at tlclimb@uga.edu.

PhD student Tim Carter and Professor Laurie Fowler begin installing the first layer of infrastructure, the impervious plastic liner.

Carter and Fowler place the second layer, a thick felt-like blanket that will retain moisture.

Carter and K.C. Chester of UGA Physical Plant finish laying the third layer, a lightweight plastic grid.

Carter installs the fourth layer of filter fabric.

Carter guides a bucketload of growing medium toward its destination.

The load of soil is deposited on the roof.

Phd student Erin Dreelin, and University Architects Linda Henneman and Kevin Kirsche plant sedum.

The final plants are installed.
