science and policy research: urban streams
project background

The logic behind this project is described in this proposal for developing an urban stream research framework and an international meeting on urbanization and stream ecology. Since this project builds upon the Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology that was held in Melbourne, Australia in December 2003, the synthesis report from that workshop also provides good background reading: Urbanization impacts on stream ecology - from syndrome to cure?

A background survey to gauge interest in the project was conducted on August 20, 2007. Here are the 32 survey responses we received:

Do you think there is value in developing a research framework?

  • 31- Yes
  • 0- No
  • 1- No response

Do you think an urban stream meeting should be held in 2008? If so, what format?

  • 14- Yes, a 1-day meeting prior to NABS 2008 (Salt Lake City, UT, USA)
  • 14- Yes, a 2-3-day stand-alone interdisciplinary meeting
  • 2- No, not worth a dedicated meeting; maybe a special session at NABS
  • 2 - No response

What do you think are the biggest outstanding research questions related to the impacts of urbanization on streams?
