service and outreach: water at UGA
water quality

Main campus and outlying UGA property directly impact 19 stream miles, 14 of which are listed as polluted under the federal Clean Water Act. UGA currently lacks a comprehensive Storm Water Management Plan, although the Grounds Department and Campus Architects are implementing innovative measures to manage storm water runoff.

operations and outreach

UGA seeks to improve surface water runoff quality on campus and in the wider community.

The Grounds Department has developed several programs that contribute to campus water quality including;

  • The implementation of stormwater best management practices by designing, constructing, and maintaining bioretention cells, pervious surface treatments and greenroof applications.
  • Conducting an inventory of the storm water management infrastructure using a Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Partnered with University Architects and Athens Clarke County on the Lumpkin Street Raingarden Project (http://www.camplan.uga.edu/sd_lumpkinst.html).
  • Training all maintenance staff about proper washing and rinsing of equipment.
  • Restoration of the historic Athens town stream on Spring Street.
  • Partnering with Athens-Clarke County and the Upper Oconee Watershed Network to restore and provide education and outreach on Trail Creek.

The University Architects are currently updating campus design guidelines to more effectively manage development and environmental stewardship. Their efforts to improve water quality include:

  • Increasing campus greenspace by eliminating impervious roadway and parking areas.
  • Elimination of impervious parking area.
  • Partnered with Grounds Department and Athens-Clarke County on the Lumpkin Street Raingarden Project.
  • Daylighting existing waterways to increase public awareness.

The UGA River Basin Center works on campus and in the wider region to manage and protect water resources through science, policy and outreach.

courses and research

Many faculty members offer courses and conduct research seeking to understand and improve the quality of the Upper Oconee watershed. A comprehensive list of these activities is currently under development. The efforts of some of these faculty can be found the Water Resources Faculty Web site. The Upper Oconee Watershed Network Web site also includes data collected through their organization.

student efforts

The student organization SEEDS (Students and Educators for Ecological Design and Sustainability), now known as Emerging Green Builders, developed a restoration plan for Tanyard Branch, the stream that runs through the center of campus and under Sanford Stadium.
